Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland assessors take into account every school's geographic, environmental, cultural and economic circumstances, and assess how efficiently and effectively the school community uses the resources available to it in each award category. Entrant booklets will be emailed to you as soon as you register online.
AWARD CATEGORIES
QUEENSLAND HEALTH 'HEALTH AND WELLBEING' AWARD… promoting and establishing active lifestyle choices
e.g. Planned physical education program, links with parents, clubs and community groups, maintained and adequate equipment and facilities, secure bike racks, adequate shade areas, hygienic and accessible drinking water, active play and fun outdoor activities, involvement in organised programs, development of physical activities etc
WASTE AWARD…SPONSORED BY SITA... conservation of natural resources, through recovery, reuse and appropriate waste management
e.g. Mulching, composting & reuse of green waste, collection and recycling (electronic waste, glass, paper, cardboard, aluminium, steel, plastic, oil and other materials), energy minimisation practices/devices, water efficient practices/devices, minimise plastic bag use; adequate, well-placed and promoted recycle bins/facilities, locations and events; 4R’s - refuse (avoid), reduce, reuse, recycle & dispose priorities etc
THE WRIGLEY COMPANY’S LITTER PREVENTION AWARD… managing and preventing litter
e.g. Literature, directional and informative signage, education programs, advertisements, curriculum studies on litter, packaging minimisation, attitudes to litter, impacts and effects of litter on the environment, “Chew it, wrap it, bin it”, and other anti-litter programs, adequate, appropriate, and well-placed bins; recycling bins, adequate collections and maintenance of infrastructure, regular school and/or community clean ups, directional and instructive signage on bins, clean school grounds, fencing or other devices to manage litter blow, litter audits etc
SCHOOLZINE COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS AWARD… partnering to motivate, educate, involve and enhance the school community
e.g. Greening Australia, QESSI, AuSSi, Landcare, Waterwatch, Bushcare, Voluntary Conservation Agreements, Land for Wildlife Commitment, school based and/or community education programs, councils, businesses, clubs and/or other groups, youth council, charities, community forums and/or workshops, Keep Australia Beautiful Queensland etc
BRISBANE PRODUCE MARKETS 'NUTRITIONAL HEALTH' AWARD… promoting and enhancing healthy food choices
e.g. Go for 2&5, fresh food initiatives or programs, healthy food tuckshop, locally grown or school grown fresh foods, seasonal menus, cultural foods awareness, strong messages for students (and parents) on nutritious foods, cleanliness and personal hygiene, subscription to the Brisbane Markets Fresh for Kids program and/or other health and nutrition related programs
DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENT & RESOURCE MANAGEMENT'S 'WATERWISE' AWARD… conserving water and being WaterWise
e.g. Water minimisation devices and practices; automatic shut-off taps, dual flush toilets, reduced grassed areas, mulching, drought tolerant planting, efficient watering techniques, grey water, rainwater tanks; registered Waterwise Starter School, Water: Learn it for life! utilisation, student communications and promotion, water audits, recognition and reward programs, water conservation lessons, protection of local waterways etc
'ENERGY' AWARD… commitment to reducing carbon footprints
e.g innovative methods of reducing carbon footprint, promotion and involvement in the community, carbon emission reduction etc
DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION & TRAINING 'YOUNG LEGEND AWARD'… outstanding contribution to the school’s Green & Healthy philosophy
e.g. youth-initiated, youth-led or youth involved activities, student participation in externally organised activities or projects, organised student communications that publicise or promote their activities etc
'BIODIVERSITY' AWARD… outstanding commitment to the three elements of sustainability
