Adopt-a-Road
Adopt-a-Road is a safe, enjoyable and educational roadside litter program that gives local communities the opportunity to contribute to a healthier and cleaner roadside environment. Adopt-a-Road mobilises an army of community-focussed organisations and individuals who clean their local roadside environment. The program’s purpose is to educate the community that littering is a social offence and an unacceptable action.
With 174,000km of State and local government maintained roads in Queensland, litter removal is a major exercise which is costly to the community. Our mission is to foster good corporate citizenship by encouraging community groups to take personal responsibility for keeping their local roadways and communities clean. Through Adopt-a-Road, volunteer groups are given an opportunity to accept responsibility for removing litter and enhance a section of an agreed local roadway or highway, for a minimum of four times per year for two years.
Adopt-a-Road activities include:
Litter:
Adopt-a-Road will generally involve the collection and removal of litter from an agreed section of roadside on a regular basis. This litter will include items such as paper, plastic wrappers, tyre parts, packets, drink containers, bottles, cigarette butts, newspapers, magazines, etc. It is not intended to include large objects such as car body parts or truck tyres. It does not include the removal of dangerous objects or dead animals. The relevant local government or its appointed contractors will continue to do this for the sections of adopted roads.
Graffiti:
Adopt-a-Road may include the removal of graffiti from bridge structures and roadside furniture, where local government has identified suitable sites.
Vegetation planting:
For suitably qualified and experienced groups, the scope of Adopt-a-Road may be extended by agreement with the relevant local government to include planting and maintaining landscape projects.
Rest areas:
Adopt-a-Road activities may include the adoption of a roadside rest area. This may include litter collection, graffiti removal, painting of buildings and playground equipment and general maintenance.
